Most overweight dogs and cats are overfed because the ration comes off the bag, which gives one number for "a 26 lb dog" without asking whether it is neutered or whether it runs. This is the arithmetic done in the exam room.

Resting energy RER = 70 · (weight in kg)^0.75, times the life-stage factor. Factors are the ones in common clinical use (WSAVA, Ohio State VMC).
